Harold H. Flugge, age 88, of Elma, died on Monday, July 7, 2008 at Colonial Manor in Elma, IA.

Harold Howard Flugge was born on October 4, 1919 to Albert and Mary (Patton) Flugge on the family farm near Elma. He attended country school and Riceville High School and worked for area farmers. Harold was united in marriage to Esther Bhend on February 14, 1943 in Le Roy, MN.

He entered the US Army and served his country during World War II in China and Burma and received his honorable discharge in 1946. Harold and Esther then farmed in the Elma area until his retirement in 1983. They continued to live on the farm.

Harold enjoyed woodworking, gardening, caring for his cats, playing cards, and Sunday dinner with his family. He was a member of St. Pauls Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and the Riceville American Legion.

Harold is survived by his wife Esther of Elma, IA; three children Janice (Daryl) Dybevik of Cresco, IA, Barbara (Tom) Schroeder of Elma, IA, Keith (Ellen) Flugge of Cary, IL; seven granddaughters Wanda (Jan) Becker, Laura (Cory) Hobson, Stacie Schroeder, Nicole Schroeder, Lisa (Owen) Berendes, Michelle (Todd) Anderson, Katie (Ian) Oberg; three great-grandchildren Samantha and Jackson Becker, and Sarah Berendes; two sisters Helen Shoars of Osage, IA and Caroline Flugge of Kansas City, MO; one brother Albert (Lois) Flugge of Elma, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Charles; two sisters Edith Groth and Dorothy Persing.

Burial will be in Saratoga Township Cemetery in Lime Springs, IA with Military Rights provided by Riceville American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, July 11, 2008 at St. Pauls Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, in Elma with Rev. Daniel Christensen officiating.
