Geo. A. Avery, who has acted for some time in the capacity of clerk in Crandall's meat shop, died on Sunday evening of sciatica. He had been long addicted to intemperate habits. He leaves a wife and child in adverse circumstances to mourn his loss. Surely they have the sympathy of the whole community. Obsequies on Wednesday in the Episcopal church.

A more spiteful, brutal, notice than the foregoing scarcely ever came under our notice. Its animus is this, and nothing more. The deceased had known Mrs. Merriam the writer of that scandalous paragraph for many years, and in the unfortunate quarrel existing between herself and her father, he had inclined strongly to the side of the latter. The question with decent people will be, "did his preference in that matter justify so untruthful, brutal, unwomanly a blow at his wife and child?" We think not, nor do we believe it was mere intemperate for Mr. Avery to take an occasional glass of beer than for his calumniator to be constantly under the influence of morphine.
