Obituary:
Arthur “Gene” Warnke, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, IA. Arthur Eugene Warnke was born to Arthur E. K. Warnke and Emma (Wermuth) on January 12, 1930 in Saratoga Township. He was baptized on March 30, 1930 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lime Springs, IA. Gene graduated from the Lime Springs High School in the Class of 1948. Gene was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and was discharged in August of 1953. He was stationed in Alaska during that time. Back in Iowa he farmed with his brother Paul and then became a rural mail carrier. His bases were in Lime Springs, Chester, and Cresco stretching out over 30 years. He enjoyed his job and reminisced about driving then, when the roads weren’t great and one could get caught in whiteouts and in snow banks. Gene liked to fish for trout and had a 22inch brown trout mounted. Hunting pheasants was a favorite pastime too. Gene enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, he was a true Hawkeye fan. Gene is survived by two sisters, Lucille of Cresco, Iowa, and Ellen Kirkestue of Postville, Iowa, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Paul, and a brother-in-law Edwin Kirkestue.
