Sarah Louisa Chapin, daughter of Erie and Chloe Root Chapin, was born in Jefferson county, New York, January 24, 1835.

She was educated in the public schools and an Academy at Evans Mills near the place of her nativity. October 8th, 1856, she was united in marriage to Lewis R. Brown. In 1859 this young couple responded to "the call of the west" and came to Orleans township, Winneshiek county, where they established a home in a log cabin.

The trip from Milwaukee was made in a lumber wagon which contained all their worldly possessions. In common with the other pioneers of this then new country they endured many privations and suffered many hardships. By the dint of hard work, the strictest economy and rare good sense they prospered and became important members of the community. By reason of the failing health of her husband the home in Orleans, which represented so much toil, self-sacrifice, and prosperity and with which so many associations and memories were bound up, was left for a home at Bentonville, Arkansas.

Failing in getting the health benefits anticipated from the climate of the south, the family home was transferred to Creston, Iowa, where in December of 1899 the husband died.

In 1900 Mrs. Brown established her home in Cresco and continued to live here until the fall of 1913 when she went to live with her daughter. She was a woman of marked intelligence and rare personal qualities, kind hearted and sympathetic she made and kept friends easily not only among those of her own age but with those of all ages.

She retained mental vigor and the spirit of youth to the last and kept in touch with the life of the day. She was a good Christian and a member of the Congregational church at Marion at the time of her death. Her last illness was of short duration and the end came peacefully at nine o'clock on the morning of the 10th inst. at the home of her daughter at Marion, Iowa. Her many friends honor her and her children rise up and call her blessed.

Her children are Henry C. of this community and Mrs. Susie B. Barrett of Marion, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gammons were held from the Congregational church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial was in Oak Lawn.
