Elgin Echo, Thursday, 13 November 1902.
Sunday, Nov. 2, Michael Malanaphy, of Cresco, was going to Chicago with a car load of cattle, and when the train stopped at North McGregor he went to a lunch counter to get something to eat. Before he finished the train started, and he boarded it on the move near the front of the train, starting to work his way back over the cars to the caboose. In some manner he fell between the cars and was badly mangled under the wheels. He lived but a short time after the accident.

M. J. Malanaphy Killed by the Cars at McGregor-
M. J. Malanaphv who left Cresco on Sunday last with a car load of stock for Chicago, fell from the cars at North McGregor and was injured so that he died in a short time thereafter and his body was brought home on the noon train Monday. It seems from reports that his train was starting as he came out from supper and that he climbed onto the cars and was walking on top of the train toward the caboose when he fell and was run over with the result stated above. He was an upright man in all his dealings and was respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and children to mourn his untimely death.Source: Twice-A-Week Plain Dealer Nov. 11, 1902, FP, C6
