Elmer W. Cutting Dead
The wholly unexpected death of Elmer W. Cutting of Decorah which occurred at his home there Tuesday, July 10 was a great shock to his old friends in Cresco and Howard county. Mr. Cutting was taken ill suddenly while at his office the Saturday previous to his death. He was taken home and seemed to be making satisfactory improvement, but the illness took a serious turn Tuesday afternoon and he passed away the following morning about 7 o'clock.
Mr. Cutting was born on a farm in Jamestown twp. Howard county, June 2, 1868, the son of Charles and Almeda Cutting, pioneer residents of this county. He attended the Breckenridge school in Decorah and later completed the law course at the University of Iowa and soon thereafter began practicing in Decorah. He was a successful lawyer and has participated in many of the most important legal controversies coming before the courts in Winneshiek and adjoining counties as well as in the supreme court of Iowa. While he applied himself closely to his profession he engaged in diversions, always of a practical and helpful nature. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and gave liberally of his time and talents for the up building of that. In turn he was honored by being elected to the highest position within the gift of the order in Iowa, that of grand master. He also took a keen interest horticulture, and was a great poultry fancier, throwing the same enthusiasm and energy into these past times which he displayed in the practice of his profession.
Of his immediate family he is survived by his wife and three children, one daughter having died about a month ago, just after having been graduated from Iowa University. He also leaves one brother, Mayor Jas. A. Cutting of this city, a sister, Mrs. Ed Wentworth of Colorado, and three half brothers residing in Minneapolis.
The Decorah Journal says: "Elmer Cutting was a man of strong and vigorous personality. Wherever he was concerned he made himself felt. His industry was almost boundless. His death creates a vacancy in Decorah's business, legal, fraternal, and social circles that will long be felt. The deepest sympathy of the community is with the bereaved family."
