Steve Cannon, injured in bus accident, dies

Funeral services were held Monday for Steven Jerome Cannon, 15 of Elma, one of seven students injured in a semitrailer truck – Howard-Winneshiek school bus accident Friday, Sept. 24.

The services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Maple Leaf with the Rev. David Gosewisch, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, New Hampton, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery at Maple Leaf.

Young Cannon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Cannon, died Thursday, Oct. 7, in St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester. He was injured when the truck hit the left rear of the school bus, which had stopped to pick up a student. The accident occurred on highway 63, one and one-half miles south of the junction of highways 63 and 9. All other students hospitalized have been dismissed.

Steve, a sophomore at Crestwood high school in Cresco, was born May 7, 1961, in New Hampton. He was active in football and F.F.A. and was an active member of the youth group, Luther League, at St. Paul’s.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Eric (Susan) Skuster of Iowa City and Barbara, a student at Wartburg college in Waverly; a brother, Keith, of Elma; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Emmons Cannon of Rock Falls.

Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Michigan City, Ind., Minneapolis and Dubuque, Mason City, Garner, Rockford, Rock Falls, Orchard, Osage, Estherville, Cresco, Lime Springs and Charles City in Iowa.
