Services to be held for Melvin Cannon

Funeral services for Melvin Cannon, 68, of Elma, formerly of the Nora Springs area, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf (rural Elma) with interment in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and also from noon until service time at the church Thursday. Conway Funeral Home in Elma is handling the arrangements.

Melvin died suddenly of an apparent heart attack at St. Joseph Community Hospital in New Hampton.

Survivors include: his wife, Ruth; two daughters: Sue Ollman of Mason City and Barb Havlik of Elma; and one son, Keith of Elma.

Services held for Melvin Cannon, 68

Funeral services for Melvin Dean (“Mel”) Cannon, 68, of Elma, formerly of the Nora Springs area, were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf (rural Elma) with interment in the church cemetery. Conway Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Mel died Monday, April 13, 1998 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Hampton of a heart attack.

He was born April 29, 1929, in Cerro Gordo County, to Emmons and Leona (Kast) Cannon. He graduated from high school in 1947. Mel married Ruth Audry Rowcliffe on September 6, 1953, in Mason City.

Mel worked at White Farm (Oliver) in Charles City, and continued to be employed there after he and Ruth moved to rural Elma to farm. During the past few years he was also a substitute school bus driver.

Melvin also served Howard County as County Supervisor for eight years. He was baptized and confirmed August 12, 1953, and was a member of St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church.

He had served as chairman of the renovation project for the Elma Train Depot Museum, and he collected antique tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; their children: Keith of Elma, Sue Ollman of Mason City; and Barbara Havlik of Elma; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; his twin sister; and one brother.

Mel was preceded in death by his youngest son, Steve; his parents; and a brother.
