Mrs. Caroline Henke

Funeral services for Mrs. Caroline Henrietta Henke were held Thursday afternoon, March 18 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 2 o’clock with Rev. L. W. Moench officiating. Mrs. Hence passed away at her home Monday morning, March 15 at 8:10 A. M., as a result of a heart ailment from which she had been a sufferer for the past five years. Obsequial music was rendered by Mrs. Oscar Queel and Miss Evelyn Baldner, the latter a granddaughter of the deceased. Selected songs were “I’m But a Stranger Here” and “Saved By Grace.”

Interment was made in the Howard Center Cemetery, the casket being borne by the following bearers: Henry Bareis, Henry Bunge, John Eberling, Carl Hein, John Nast and Ferd Prinz.

Caroline Lange was born Nov. 1, 1858, in Germany, the daughter of Henry and Frederick Lange. She received her education in Berlin, and was united in marriage there to August H. Henke on October 5, 1883.

With her husband, the deceased came to the United States and to Howard County in April 1885, settling on a farm in Howard Center Township. They later purchased a farm in Saratoga township where they continued to live until 1914, when they moved to Cresco.

Mrs. Henke was the mother of five children: August Jr., who died in infancy; Albert A.; Anna, Mrs. George Niewald; Eda, Mrs. John Aberly who passed away Sept. 7, 1912 and Lena, Mrs. Leonard Baldner. The husband and father passed away January 26, 1916. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Emigrating to the United States at the same time with Mr. and Mrs. Henke were her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Pettelko and family. Mrs. Pettelko passed away a month after her arrival here, leaving five children, four of whom Mrs. Henke took into her home and cared for for several years.

Mrs. Henke lived a life of usefulness; always ready to share the burdens of others. She was a kind and loving mother and a consistent Christian. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany and was a member here of the Immanuel church and an honorary member of the Bethany Circle.

Memorial gifts in her memory were given for Missions, Lutheran Children’s Home at Waverly, and the Children’s Home at Sterling, Nebraska.

Attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. B. Heidthke, Brownsdale, Minn. An only cousin of the deceased, Mrs. Bertha Mayer, of St. Paul was unable to attend on account of weather conditions.
