Frances “Fran” Thomson, 77, of Cresco, passed away Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Evans Memorial Home, Cresco. Funeral services are in Cresco at the United Methodist Church today (Thursday, June 2), at 11 a.m. with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, June 1, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Cresco. Memorials may be directed to Fran’s favorite causes: HOCA, Oaklawn Cemetery, Borlaug Farm or the Cresco Theater Commission. The Thomson Charitable Trust will match donations.

Frances "Fran" Thomson, 77, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Evans Memorial Home, Cresco, Iowa.

Frances Joan Baker was born on June 24, 1933 to Lila Larson and Luther Baker in Decorah, Iowa. She attended Decorah schools where she was a cheerleader and excelled in vocal music. Her quartet received first in state competition. She was a member of the high school honor society.

After graduating, she worked at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis as a life guard while attending Iowa Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University). She was a beauty queen and graduated with a degree in elementary education with a minor in remedial reading.

Fran taught kindergarten in Anamosa, Iowa and later in Cresco's south side school and remedial reading which included some students who went on to distinguished careers.

In 1958 she married John (Jack) Thomson, to which union, a son J. Scott Thomson was born in 1960.

Fran joked that she was the biblical Ruth in joining her husband's Congregational Church where she taught confirmation, directed the choir, and sang solos as an alto and a contralto.

She was an ardent PEO, passing through the offices, and as president performing for the state annual meeting in Des Moines. Fran participated in the Cresco Centennial in a dance routine.

Fran was a quality force in the growth of the Cresco Union Savings Bank, setting the decorating standards and heading up the entertaining venues.

She is survived by her husband Jack, a son Scott (Stephanie), and three grandchildren Samantha, John and William.

Her family will miss her council and her love.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 1st, from 4PM to 7 PM at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Cresco, Iowa.

Service:
Funeral services will be held in Cresco, Iowa, at the United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 2nd at ll AM, with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery.
