Vance

Christian Jacob Vance was born January 3, 1858, on a farm home near Ossian, Iowa. His parents were John Valentine and Margaret M. Vance. His early education was received in the rural schools of Winneshiek county. He was united in marriage to Mary Frances Banning August 23, 1881, and they started housekeeping on his father’s farm; later moving to a farm home of their own two miles from Ossian. In the fall of 1891 they moved to Howard county, making their home on a farm northwest of Cresco where they lived until the fall of 1913. They retired and moved to Cresco where they lived together until his wife’s death in 1932.

There was born to this union seven children, four of whom died in infancy; one child a girl, passing away at the age of nine. Mr. Vance had been in failing health over a number of years, but had been able to be up and around until about a week ago when he was stricken. He passed away at his home at 12:30 p. m. on Saturday, February 25. He leaves to mourn his passing, a son and daughter; P. V. Vance and Mrs. E. C. Teetshorn of Cresco, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. P. M. Banning, and Mrs. F. O. Farnsworth of Cresco; Mrs. Morgan Cruizan of Nelson, Nebraska; Mrs. H. W. Burton of Hurley, S. D., and Mrs. Ida Rathman of Sioux Falls, S. D.

Mr. Vance was a member of the Woodman of the World and Woodman Circle lodges of Cresco for over thirty years, finding great satisfaction in the affiliation with these orders and being an active member thereof.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend T. M. Nielsen, Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home of his son, P. V. Vance in Cresco. Interment was made in the family burial lot in Centenial{sp} cemetery near Ossian, Iowa.

Relatives and friends attending the funeral from a distance were deceased’s grandson Omer Vance of St. Paul; Ann Scanlon of Minneapolis; Mrs. Fred Winn of Ossian, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. John Rosa, Decorah, Ia.
