DON SCHUMAN MEETS INSTANT DEATH WHEN FIRE TRUCK CRASHES
Plunged Down a Boulder Strewn Embankment In California.
A Sacramento, Calif., daily paper gives the following account of the accident which caused the death of Donald Schuman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schuman of Albion twp. Brief mention of his death was made in last week's Times. The article follows:
Funeral services are pending here for Donald E. Schuman, 33, World War II veteran, killed in a spectacular truck accident.
He met instant death when the forest service fire truck in which he was riding went through the guard rail on Dead Man's Curve, three miles west of Westwood on Highway 36, and plunged down a boulder strewn embankment.
Calvin Fenton, also an employee of the forest service and driver of the truck, escaped with a fracture of a shoulder blade and minor injuries.
Fenton and Schuman, stationed at the Coppervale Hanger station six miles east of here, were on their way to Chester Wednesday for mop-up operations on a fire there. As the truck went into the curve it swerved from the road against the guard rail, tore out 60 feet of the barrier and plunged more than 100 feet over huge boulders which cover the hillside. Schuman was thrown from the truck and dashed to death against the boulders. Parts of the truck were strewn the length of the embankment and all wheels were torn from the vehicle.
For the last several years an average of one person a year has been killed on the curve. Attempts to have it improved have failed and petitions are being prepared in a renewed attempt to eliminate the hazard.
Schuman joined the forest service in 1935 and was employed by it until he joined the Army in 1943. He was discharged in January of this year and returned to his former Job.
He is survived by his parents in Cresco, Ia., and a sister, Mrs. Faith Crum of Herlong, Lassen county.
