Charles W. Jones was born in Foreston, Howard Co., IA 22 Oct 1862 to Richard W. ("Iowa Dick") Jones and Jane Owens Jones. He was married 27 Aug 1884 in Cresco, Howard Co., IA to Katie Evans.

OBITUARY: Black Hills Press, Sturgis, South Dakota, October 26, 1897, page 5.

Charley Dachtler brought the news into town yesterday morning of the suicide of Chas. Jones, near his home about six miles north of Sturgis.

Sheriff Brown and Dr. Sanderson went out to the place in the afternoon and found the body hanging to a tree on a steep incline. Jones had been suffering from mental aberration for years, having been confined at one time in an asylum in Iowa. Yesterday morning he took a rope with him saying he was going after some horses and shortly after his body was found by Charley Smith hanging to the tree, fully dressed, even his hat being on his head. A coroner's jury rendered a verdict of suicide while mentally deranged. The funeral will take place at Whitewood tomorrow. The deceased leaves a wife and two children.

Inscription on tombstone:
Although he sleeps his memory doth live
And cheering comfort to his mourner's give
He followed virtue as his truest guide
Lived as a Christian - as a Christian died
