Miss Susan A. Maxham was born in Windsor Co., Vt., April 22, 1844 and was married to Benjamin Bates March 31, 1861. To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters. The eldest son, James, and Mrs. Clara West and Mrs. Rena Foster reside at Bolivar, Mo., and Francis at Missoula, Mont.

The deceased professed faith in Christ, Nov. 22, 1872. A few years after she united with the Congregational church at Saratoga, Iowa. She was a faithful witness there for Jesus who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood. From Saratoga she came to Riceville, united with the church and lived in faithful service of her master here until Sept. 22, 1903. She then removed to Bolivar, Mo. and remained until death came Nov. 22, 1906.

Four grandchildren at Bolivar, Mo., and a granddaughter in Montana live to realize the loss of a loving, patient grandmother. Also one brother, two sisters and other relatives in Mitchell Co., Iowa and a host of friends both in Iowa and Missouri mourn the loss of a faithful helper in the work of God.
