ED CASHMAN, 55, DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS
------
Was a Native of Howard County
------Edward Cashman, 55, a native of the Elma community, died Wednesday at the University Hospital at Iowa City, after an illness of several years duration. Mr. Cashman was a victim of cancer, having suffered from that disease for some time. He had sought relief several times at various places and had submitted to several operations in an effort to gain relief, but it seems the grim reaper was not to be denied. Mr. Cashman had gone to Iowa City last week in a last effort to gain relief.
Mr. Cashman was a son of Mr. and and [sic] Mrs. T.J. Cashman, early pioneers in western Howard county, and was born in Afton township January 14, 1880. Here he lived practically his entire lifetime, assisting his parents on the farm, and here he received his education and training.
Mr. Cashman is survived by his mother, his father having passed away some ten years ago, his brothers John of Allison, Iowa, Clem and James of Elma, and his sisters, Mrs. Wm. Marr of New Haven, Mrs. Mary Knox of Burr Oak, and Mrs. Grace Olsen of Cushing, Okla. One sister, Loretta, died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, June 29. In the Immaculate Conception Church at Elma, with the Rev. P.E. Donnelly in charge. Interment will be made in the St. Cecelia cemetery.
Mr. Cashman’s passing will be a sad loss, not only to his bereaved and saddened family, but to the entire community. Ed, as he was familiarly called by his hundreds of friends in this community, was an even tempered, hard working man, a friend to all who knew him, ever willing to help his neighbors, kindly on all occasions -- a truly fine citizen. He was a devout member of the Catholic faith, always active in church work, a fit example to younger folk. Mr. Cashman never married.
The New Era joins the many friends of the family in expressing sympathy in this hour of their untimely bereavement.
