LIFE’S BOOK CLOSED FOR TOM CASHMAN

This community lost one of its pioneer settlers last week when Tom Cashman died at his home in Elma after several months illness. He had been in poor health since last November and recently underwent an operation from which he was recovering when the end came suddenly, due to a stroke of apoplexy.

Mr. Cashman was born at sea, while his parents were enroute to America from Ireland, on [D]ecember 22, 1848. He was christened on board and named in honor of the Captain of the ship “Thomas Montgomery Smith Cashman.[“] On the 6th of October, 1875 he married Miss Josephine O’Conner. Eight children were born to the union, four boys and four girls: John J., Edward, Clem, James, Mary (Mrs. Knox), Grace (Mrs. Wm. Olson), Anna (Mrs. W.H. Marr), and Loretta who died in infancy. All of the living children were present when the father died.

Soon after the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Cashman settled on a farm north west of here and lived there until about eight years ago when they moved to Elma.

On October 6th last they celebrated their golden wedding with mass at the Immaculate Conception church and a big dinner and re[c]eption in the New Hall in the afternoon and evening.

Mr. Cashman was a splendid type of man, his industry, cheerfulness and rugged honesty won for him success in life and a host of friends such as few are fortunate to enjoy.

The funeral was held Friday from the Immaculate Conception church. The pastor, Rev. M.J. Farrelly celebrated solemn high mass and preached a fitting sermon. Internment was made in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The pall bearers were two grandsons, Raymond and Clarence Cashman and nephews, Jerry Cashman, Adrian Cashman, Mike Higgins and Will O’Connel[l].

The following from a distance were present at the funeral: Mrs. Cashman’s brother, Maurice O’Conner, and her two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Daly and Mrs. Bridget Sullivan of Dubuque; John O’Connor and Mrs. James Egan of Waterloo; Mrs. Pierce Cashman of Chicago; Mrs. Walter McGrane of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Pat McGrane, New Hampton; Tom Cashman, Mrs. Steve Ahearn, Miss Mayme [illegible]ler, Mrs. John Morrison, Mrs. C[illegible]lin of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Mrs. Eliza Cashman and son Charles, Mr. and Mrs. John Callahan, Earl and Linferd Cashman, Austin, Minn.; Mrs. Mike Liberty, Baily, Iowa; Lal Cashman of Minneapolis and Wilfred Clear of New Hampton.
