55th Wedding Anniversary.
Last Tuesday evening, Feb. 21st, was the fifty-fifth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gillett, who were among the pioneers of this county and the first residents in the east part of Cresco, and who have the distinction of being the first couple married in Howard County. During the past winter, on account of Mr. Gillett's somewhat feeble health, they having been staying with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Burgess; but last Monday they returned to their own home, so a number of relatives and old friends made up a party to give them a surprise “housewarming. ” They took with them well filled baskets and after greetings and congratulations a bountiful supper was served. An appropriate address was made by Mrs. Moon in the presentation of tokens of friendship and esteem, beautiful pieces of silverware, as souvenirs of the occasion.
This anniversary was unique not only because of the number of years of their married life, but also because they have always kept their first home, never making changes except to add to the original structure. They have met joys and sorrows together with an abiding faith and sympathy, ever strengthening the bonds that united them so many years ago.
