Golden Wedding Anniversary.
February 21, 1866, at Auburn, Fayette county, Iowa, occurred the marriage of Edmund Gillett and Helen M. Barbor and Wednesday, February 21, 1906, at their home in Cresco, occurred a very pleasant celebration of the event, which took the character of almost a strictly family affair. Both were residents of Vernon Springs and commenced life together on the farm which he now owns and where he still has his residence. At the time of their marriage there was no minister of the gospel in the county and wishing to have the ceremony performed by one, they went to Auburn and were married by Rev. Helm, a Presbyterian minister.
Since that time Mr. Gillett has played a prominent part in the history of the county, having been appointed commissioner to organize the county for its first election, and was later County Clerk and has since filled other offices of trust and responsibility at the request of his fellow citizens, and today leads a life of quiet and retirement in the old home be has known so long, still in possession' of the respect and friendship of the friends and acquaintances of over half a century. His wife has with him lived the life of a pioneer and known all its hardships and all its joys and doubtless finds ample cause for self-satisfaction in the possession of a family of boys and girls whose success in life is in no small part due to her wisdom and training,
Four of their children, Fred of Minneapolis, Arthur of Browns Valley, Minn, Mrs. A. J. Caward and Mrs. Ray Burgess of Cresco were present at the celebration. Another son, Ed, is a resident of California. These and a very limited number of close friends, made up the company. In spite of determined efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Gillett to prevent the presentation of gifts, they were made the recipients of several elegant and costly presents.
The PLAIN DEALER sincerely congratulates this worthy couple on the attainment of so rare an event—a golden wedding—and hopes that they may both live to enjoy many more years of happy married life.

Transcriber’s Note: The headline reads golden anniversary which is normally 50 years; however, the dates indicate 40 years.
