Golden Wedding Annivarsay.{sic}
Christmas day was the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Madison Taft, and in honor of the occasion a large company of friends and relatives perpetrated a genuine surprise on them Christmas evening, the party being gotten up by their son and daughter, Mr. E. J. Taft and wife and Mr. L. P. Mason and wife.
About 70 invitations were sent out but on account of the extreme cold only about 40 were present. The only one present that evening who was present at the wedding 50 years ago, was a brother, Mr. Alvin Taft. A sister, Mrs. Anna Holcomb and her son, Mr. James Holcomb, the other ones present before were not present on this occasion on account of the severe cold. Two sisters of Mrs. Taft, Mrs. J. B. Mitchell and Mrs. Wm. Patterson were present, but two other sisters, Mrs. Jas. Nichols, of Albion and Mrs. Dwight Darrow of Cresco were unable to attend on account of the weather,
A silver tea set of four pieces and gold headed cane were presented to aged couple in a few well chosen word. by Rev. John Gammons.
Refreshments were served and the evening spent in social converse and singing by Wm. Patterson Jr., and the company. The last song sang before the guests departed was "God be with you till we meet again."
