A quiet home wedding was celebrated at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lathrop E. Smith, 140 East Gorham street, at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the marriage of Mr. Joseph W. Howe, of Memphis, Tenn., and Miss May M. Lewis, of Madison. The bride is the only daughter of Mrs. L. E. Smith, formerly Mrs. Herbert A. Lewis, her father, who died in 1884, was clerk of the courts for Dane county, business manager of the Wisconsin State Journal, and later a law partner of Mr. H. M. Lewis. Miss Lewis was born in Madison, and educated in the city schools and state university. She recently hold the position as trustee and business manager of the Wisconsin Journal of Education. Mr. Howe is the son of Mr. J. P. Howe, a prominent citizen and capitalist of Cresco, la. He is a graduate of the Iowa university. After his graduation he was instructor of science in the Iowa City high school, a position he resigned to become assistant civil engineer of the K. C. W. & G. K. R. at Lake Charles, La. He has also been connected with the civil engineering departments of the Union Pacific railroad, at Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the C. & N. W. R. R., at Madison, and superintendent of shops of the Canadian Bridge & Iron company, at Montreal. He is now a member of the firm of Howe & Lovell, civil engineers and architects, at Memphis, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Howe left Tuesday evening for Chicago. They will go from there directly to Memphis. Both the young people are hold in high esteem and the best wishes of scores of friends go out to them.—Madison (Wis.) Democrat, Nov. 17, 1897.
