The Wedding of W. H. Carter.
Oshkosh Standard, July 31, 1879.
The wedding of W. H. Carter, our old genial friend and Knight of the hammer and anvil, Friday afternoon. It was a complete surprise to us. Will, always wears a genial, cheerful look on his cheek, but when we met him that morning the smile was broader and deeper than we ever saw it before. The first thought was that he had been nominated from the 5th district on the Greenback ticket, but soon learned that it was something better than going to the legislature--he had been nominated, elected, and was about to be installed in the desirable position of a life partner of Mrs. Huldah M. Bradford.
The ceremony was performed at Mr. Carter's residence, the first frame house, by the way, put up in Waukau, having been built in the spring of 1847. Rev. Jenne officiated at the wedding.
A large number of the most prominent men of the village and town were present with their wives. Hon. D. R. Bean, Vic. Wood, 'Squire Lincoln, John R. Hall, O. A. Parks, Thos. Palfrey, G. A. Hawks, E. B. Thrall, F. Shove, Charley Miller, George Slingsby, Art. Pomeroy and A. Sutherland, were some of the gentlemen present from the immediate vicinity. There were others whose names have escaped us. Mr. and Mrs. Merriam, from Berlin, and Messrs, H. Sheerar and Geo. H. Charlesworth, with their wives, from Omro, were also present.
After the ceremony and the usual congratulations, the wedding presents were in order, detailed mention of which we shall have to omit. Then followed the wedding feast. Tables were spread in the grove opposite the house, and loaded down with good things for the inner man. An hour or two was pleasantly spent around the festive board, and Will. and his wife, surrounded by their hundred friends, were the happiest of the happy.
And if ever a man deserved happiness, Will. is the one, and we should be remiss in our duty to him and his, did we not express our sincere wish that the new partnership just formed may prove a long and a pleasant one, and remunerative.
Although we were obliged to leave Waukau Saturday morning, we are informed that the Omro Brass Band went up to Waukau Tuesday evening and gave the newly married pair a surprise serenade.
Our genial and truthful friend, Mrs. Lottie Kellow, we believe is a daughter of Mr. Carter's, and will doubtless rejoice with the many friends of her father in this pleasant union, and the glorious cheer so cordially extended to him on the happy occasion above alluded to.
