Dr. William R. Vaughan, 82, of New London, died Friday October 14, 2011 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.
He was born June 17, 1929 in Emmetsburg, Iowa to William Gerald and Ruby Icele Leonard Vaughan. On July 11, 1956 in Flint, Michigan, he married Joan Beverly Girling. He was a 1947 graduate of Emmetsburg High School, 1951 graduate of The University of Iowa, and 1955 graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Iowa. He came to New London in 1956 and practiced medicine until his retirement February 1, 2011. He was a captain in the U.S. Army medical service from 1957-1959. He was a member of the Iowa Medical Society, Henry County Medical Society, American Medical Association, past president and member of the New London Community School Board, associate staff member of the Henry County Health Center, and Great River Medical Center. He was medical director of the New London Nursing and Rehab Center until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of New London; one daughter, Susan Emily Kratz of Waukesha, WI; four sons, David Lewis Vaughan of Aiken, SC, William Matthew Vaughan of York, PA, Andrew Carey Vaughan of Tampa, FL, and Eric Russell Vaughan of Surprise, AZ; four grandchildren, one sister Cynthia Anne Brunk, Shoreline, WA, and one brother, Allan Vaughan of Ellsworth, PA; nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Dr. Vaughan will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the New London United Methodist Church, with pastors David Mixon and Jim Roth officiating. Following the service a luncheon will be held at the Linkin Center, New London, with burial immediately following in Long Creek Cemetery rural Danville. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the New London Rescue Unit, New London United Methodist Church, or the Donor's Choice.
