Robert Henry Dameron

Robert Henry Dameron, 88, of New London, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

A memorial service and inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date at Elliott Chapel in New London.

Memorials have been established for the New London Fire and Rescue, New London Nursing and Rehab Center, Great River Hospice and Oakland Mills Community Church or the donor's choice.

The Rev. Dameron was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Birmingham, the son of Mervin Berthel "Bill" and Frieda Sperfslage Dameron. He married Evelyn Nelson in Burlington, April 30, 1948. She died Sept. 7, 1982. He married Joyce Angstead Huffman April 16, 1988 at Oakland Mills.

He was a 1943 graduate of New London High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.

He served in the Navy for two and a half years on the U.S.S. APc 22 ship during World War II.

He was a member of the New London VFW No. 7641, and served as chaplain for many years.

He was a member of the Henry County Honor Guard.

He pastored either as interim or full-time at Salina Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church in Brighton, Oakland Mills Community Church, Bentley Community Church in Bentley, Ill., and at the Pontoosuc Community Church in Pontoosuc, Ill., from 1987 until his retirement in 2001.

He accepted Christ as his savior Jan. 8, 1957, and called it his second birthday.

He enjoyed serving as Chaplain of the VFW, traveling with his wife Joyce, and hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the NRA.

He served on Southeast Iowa Youthful Christ Board.

He served on New London City Council and New London Utility Board.

He attended Oakland Mills Community Church and was pastor emeritus there.

He was employed at JI Case. He worked at New London Post Office for 22.5 years.

He was a sales representative of Moorman Manufacturing Co. for 12.5 years.

Survivors include his wife of New London; two daughters, Carolyn Walker and spouse Tom of Missoula, Mont., and Jan Robinson and spouse Rich of Lolo, Mont.; two sons, Bob Dmaeron(sp) Jr. and David and Teresa Dameron of Mt. Pleasant; two step-daughters, Kim Otte and spouse Neil of Huntsville, Ala., and Shelley Warden and spouse Dave of West Branch; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald; and one grandchild.
