Mrs. Albert Werner Dies on Sunday - Came To United States From Germany Fifty-One Years Ago.
Mrs.Albert Werner of five miles northwest of Mt. Pleasant died at the home of Mrs. Piatt on South Jackson Street on Sunday morning at nine-thirty. Mrs. Werner, who had been ill for the past four months, was 65 years old. Flora Turk was born at Frighunsen, Germany, and at the age of 14 came across unaccompanied by friends or relatives. After six weeks on the ocean, the boat landed at New York and she came immediately to Creston, Iowa, to join her brother, Mark Turk who was in railroad work there. The boat on which she came to America, sank on the return trip. At the age of 17, she was married to Albert Werner, also employed with the railroad.
A few years later they moved to Winfield and later to a farm north of Mt. Pleasant where they had resided since.
Mr. Werner and five children survive: Mrs. Kate Walden of Ottumwa, Mrs. Mary Knedler of Fairfield, Mrs. Luella Woodson of Riverton, Wyoming, Ben Werner of Burlington and Harry Werner, who is employed with the Sunshine Oil company in Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She, the last member of the Turk family, was a faithful mother and a willing helper among neighbors and friends.
