Chase A. Garmoe, 69 of Hillsboro died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at his home, following a short illness.

The body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. A private family inurnment will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Following the graveside services, friends will be invited to visit at the family home at 1101 Salem Road, Hillsboro.

Visitation began at noon today at the memorial chapel. The family will receive friends this evening following a 6:30 p.m. Rosary service at the memorial chapel.

Memorials have been established to Crossroads Hospice of Southeast Iowa, the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and to the Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Unit.

Mr. Garmoe was born Jan. 11, 1934, in rural Henry County, the son of Ross A. and Lois E. Alter Garmoe. He married Ethel M. Hurkes Nov. 22, 1954, in Tacoma, Wash.

He attended Glasgow School. He served in the United States Navy from March 10, 1952, to Feb. 28, 1956, during the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of chief petty officer and hade received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Since 1956, the Garmoes made their home in Hillsboro. For many years, Mr. Garmoe was a metalsmith with the H & H Mold Company in Fairfield. He retired in 1996.

He was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant and the American Legion Post of Hillsboro. He gardened, grew flower and spent time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Ethel of Hillsboro; one daughter, Lisa Beames and her husband Joe of Mount Pleasant; two son, Ray "Tony" Garmoe and his wife Trisha of Des Moines, and Matthew Garmoe and his wife Jill of Houghton; five sisters, Margaret Parsons of Lake Forest, Minn., Marion Watson of Salem, Audrey Nichols of Douds, Le Spearman of Ankeny and Cathy Moehle of Mediapolis; one brother, Ross Garmoe of Kirkland, Wash.; six grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Rich Pye of Naperville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Annette Garmoe and Patricia Pye; and one sister, Inez Holiday.
