"James S. Chandler, a highly respected citizen of Danville, passed away last evening at six o'clock at his home, after a long illness. He was born in Henry county seventy-two years ago and his wife formerly Miss Lucella Miller, was the first white child born in Des Moines County. Deceased had been a successful farmer and stock raiser, being active until four years ago, when he retired and took up his residence at Danville. He had been a lifelong member of the Baptist church. Surviving are the wife and nine children: Mrs. John Foster and Mrs. John Chadwick of Bloomfield, Iowa. Mrs. T.L. White of New London, Mrs. L.R. Kelly of Danville, Frank, Will, James Chandler of Danville, John of New London and Everett Chandler of Burlington. The entire family was at Mr. Chandler's bedside at the time of his passing. Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Chandler celebrated their gold wedding anniversary. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family home." Source: Burlington Gazette July 24, 1908
