1919 December 18th, Salem Weekly News,Elias Andrew Friend, was born in McDonaugh County, Ill., Nov. 18, 1834. He departed this life Dec. 12, 1919, at his home in Salem, Ia., aged 85 years, 24 days. His father was Abel Friend and was born in Kentucky. His mother, Elizabeth Wallace, was born in Scotland. ( Nova Scotia, I think. mkb.)
Mr. Friend was twice married. On July 14, 1861, he was united in marriage to Sylvania A. Bench and of his children six survive. He leaves also 10 grandchildren and one sister, Maria Bell of Panora, Ia.
He enlisted at Linville, Iowa, Co. D. , 40th Iowa Infantry, serving three years during the Civil War and was honorable discharged.
Thus we record the passing of one of our most honored and respected citizens. His kindly nature and well being toward all men won for him a place of high and affectionate regard in the hearts of all who knew him.
The funeral was held at the Congregational Church Sunday, at 2 P. M. Appropriate music was furnished by the choir. Sermon by T. R. Way. Burial in East cemetery.
