New London Journal: Hiram Allen, son of William and Elizabeth Mullen Allen, was born October 9,1850 on a farm ten miles north of Burlington. At the age of eight years, he came with his parents to New London. After finishing the course in the New London academy, Mr. Allen attended the University of Michigan and took his degree in 1871. In 1886 he was united in marriage with Jesse Allsup of Mt. Pleasant. In 1889 he began the publication of the New London Sun, which he continued for twelve years. In his younger days, Mr. Allen started the New London public library and was for many years an ardent worker in increasing its collection and in arousing interest in it. He was tireless in his endeavors to bring to the use of the New London citizens and all other improvements that science affords for the comfort and convenience of mankind.
He had a rarely gifted and cultivated mind and a nature that impressed itself affectionately on both the old and the young alike. He is survived by a widow and a son, Robert, and a daughter, Mildred.
The funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. Mr. Holler of the Presbyterian Church had charge of the service in the home and the Masons performed rites at the grave in Burge cemetery.
