Wayne Simmons
Wayne T. Simmons, 89, of Mount Pleasant died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Dec. 8, 1917, north of Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Barton Jr. and Bertha Miriam Campbell Simmons. On April 11, 1945, he married Selma King in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Simmons worked in materials management in the atomic energy division of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 29 years retiring in 1981. He worked for Universal Motors for six years. He served in the Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster.

He attended rural schools west of Oakland Mills. He was a 50-year member of the Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge 8, A.F. & A.M. and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Mount Pleasant Golf & Country Club. He enjoyed golf.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Dennis Simmons of Moline, Ill.; one daughter, Mary Hassenfritz of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from noon to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. A prayer service will be at 5:30 p.m. after which the family will receive friends.

The funeral for Mr. Simmons will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Nicholas J. Adam officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
