Romona Strickland

Romona Iona Strickland, 67, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died Sunday evening, June 13, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington after a battle with cancer. The daughter of Leonard and Nellie Rice Hand, she was born Aug. 5, 1936, at Burlington. Romona married Harry Jack Strickland in November 1960 at Burlington. He died Sept. 2, 1973.

She graduated from Sperry High School in 1955 where she had enjoyed playing basketball. Romona was a homemaker, being a very devoted wife and mother. She was a real supporter of her family especially in sporting and other events. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed Native American artifacts.

Survivors include 10 children, Angel & Bill Akers of Mediapolis, Reese & Lynda Strickland of Pleasant Hill, Marty & Tiphney Strickland of Mediapolis, Denzil & Nerea Strickland of Oakville, Harry & Dianne Strickland of Salt Lake City, Utah, Ernie & Billie Strickland of Kansas City, Missouri, Harriett Strickland of Kissimmee, Florida, Ronald & Paula Strickland of Cherokee, Jerry Strickland of Lebanon, Missouri, and Patricia Knapp of Des Moines; a son-in-law, Kerry Hamilton of New London; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight brothers and sisters, Marion "Tex" Hand of Burlington, Percy Hand of Burlington, Gerald Hand of Mediapolis, Beverly Hand of Mediapolis, Roger Hand of Sperry, Sierra Hand of Mediapolis, Rickie Hand of Burlington, and Marilyn Hand of Fort Worth, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; a daughter, Carol; and a brother, Marvin.

Friends may call after noon on Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis, where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home. Harry Strickland will conduct the ceremony. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday in Rose Hill Cemetery at Brookfield, Missouri, beside her beloved husband.

A memorial fund has been established.

The casket bearers will include Chase Strickland, Duwain Scott, Ron Strickland Jr., Greg Sutherland, Ron Hamilton, Heath Hand and Parker Strickland.
