Marie Bergstrom, 97, of Swedesburg, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield. Born July 25, 1906, near Galesburg, Ill., she was the daughter of Emery and Lillie Peterson Bergstrom.

Miss Bergstrom taught school in Winfield from 1936 to 1946, and for the next 25 years in Moline, Ill. She retired in 1971 after 44 years of teaching.

She was a 1924 graduate of Olds High School, a 1948 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College and received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1953. She was a member of the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, WELCA, Henry County Art Association and Swedish Heritage Society.

She enjoyed painting, quilting, reading and playing the piano. She was known for the poetry she wrote.

Survivors include one sister, Mildred Bergstrom of Winfield; one brother, Melvin Bergstrom of Swedesburg; and 18 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated.

A memorial service for Miss Bergstrom will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Philip Borleske officiating. A private family burial will be prior to the service in Swedesburg Church Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Swedesburg Lutheran Church and the Swedish Heritage Society.
