Darrell Lee "Turk" Borchardt, 61, of Wayland, formerly of Washington, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at his home.

Born May 19, 1942, in Welcome, Minn., he was the son of Theodore and Malinda Fritz Borchardt. On June 5, 1959, he married Jayne Blanchar in Welcome.

Mr. Borchardt farmed with his father and raised turkeys in the Welcome area before moving to Washington in 1966, where he was district sales manager for Northrup King Seed Co. He then worked for 15 years as regional sales manager for Jacques Seed Co. and following that was the Iowa district manager with Heartland Payment Systems. He loved the sales field and was an entrepreneur who started three businesses on his own and was in the middle of a trademark application for "You Don't Have to Be Blind" and "The Blind Visionary."

He graduated from Welcome High School and attended Mankato State College. During his years in Washington, he was involved in the Community Theater. Darrell was a 32–degree Mason and a Shriner. He attended Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where he taught adult Sunday school.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Timothy Borchardt of Iowa City and Thomas Borchardt of Ankeny; one daughter, Tammy Sybil of Wayland; four grandchildren; one great–grandson; one sister, Ione Nelson of Welcome; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Borchardt will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland, with the Rev. Robert Hartzler officiating. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Great River Hospice and A–Plastic Anemia MD Foundation.

Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland is in charge of arrangements.
