LELAND MICHIGAN - Roberta "Bobbie" Elaine McKay, 76, a resident of Leland, passed away in her sleep Thursday morning July 10, 2003, in Leland.

Roberta was born to Jacob and Margaret Roth in Wayland, Iowa, in 1927. Her family moved to Washington, Iowa, and then to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she attended Franklin High School and Coe College. At Coe she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Thespians. At the college she met her loving husband of 49 years, John McKay (deceased), a Cedar Rapids native.

John, a son of Ruth Chandler McKay, had been a summer resident of Leland since birth. Upon marriage in 1947, Bobbie joined John for over four decades, as Leland summer vacationers. After moving from Cedar Rapids, to Nashville, Tennessee, Bobbie and John retired to Leland, in 1991.

Bobbie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her memory will be cherished by her sons, John Scott McKay of Leland and Rob McKay and wife Kathy of Boca Raton, Florida; and her adoring granddaughters, Heather and Brianne McKay of Boca Raton.

Bobbie left many close dear friends. Everyone who knew her loved her generosity, kindness, sense of humor and listening ear. She possessed a special energy, soul and spirit, going out of her way to make others feel good. Quoting one friend, "Today is a very sad day. That gentle, steady rain this morning must have been tears for the loss of our dear friend and neighbor, Bobbie McKay, who died in her sleep last night. Her sons Rob and Scott and all her friends will miss, very much, this fun, funny, kind lady..."

An avid golfer, bridge player, gardener, reader, and traveler, Bobbie enjoyed making crafts as well as performing thousands of hours of community service, through such organizations as the Junior League and the Leelanau Conservancy.

Her husband John, her parents, brother Franklin Roth, and sister Eudora Auld, preceded her in death.

Graveside service will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery north of Leland, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, with reception to follow.

As Bobbie was an active member of the Leelanau Conservancy, the family has requested in lieu of flowers those wishing to express their condolences may do so by contributing to the Leelanau Conservancy, 105 N. First St., Leland, MI 49654.
