CONCLUDING H.S. GRADUATION AT SALEM FRIDAY

Salem – Dr. J. Richard Wilmeth will speak at the Salem high school graduation exercises. Dr. Wilmeth, a Salem graduate, is Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the State University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1936 and his Master of Arts degree in 1939. Dr. Wilmeth earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., in 1943. He has been in his present position with the State University of Iowa since 1950.

The Commencement, which will be held in the Salem Methodist church on Friday evening, May 22 at 8 p.m., completes the high school career of the largest class to attend Salem high school in many years. Fifteen [sic: only fourteen are named] students will receive their diplomas. They are Norman Bell, Phyllis Berrie, William Davis, Mary Lou Elmore, Jim Farr, Mary Martha Gilson, Brian Gray, Bart Haushahn, Richard Kerr, Russell Remick, George Septer, Wanda Stewart, Harold Turbett and Anna Upton.

Eighth grade students who will also receive diplomas at the graduation exercises are Deane Bailey, Tom Bell, Kathryn Blakely, Ralph Brown, Larry Cammack, Fay Croswhite, George Davis, Connie Farr, Dana Hallowell, Bob Hamm, Betty Haushahn, Alfred Kleemeyer, Marvin Krogmeier, Marilyn Leveling, Ronald McDowell, Leonard Payne, Tom Savage, Bobby Stewart, Floyd Turbett and Martha Watson.

This is the last graduation for Salem high school, ending one of the longest traditions in Iowa. Salem was the site of the first college west of the Mississippi, Whittier College, founded by the Friends in 1837. This tradition has been carried on into the public high school that ends with this graduation.

The high school class will go to Yellowstone National Park on their tour this year.
