Excerpts from “The Home Journal”, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, December 3, 1857. In a letter to “Mr. Editor” and signed by “Spectator”. Unknown transcriber:

This University…I Learn…that Students of both sexes are admitted on equal terms, pursue the same course of studies, and will receive the same collegiate honors…

The essays of the young ladies, particularly, would do honor to any literary publication….

I could hardly believe my own eyes, or trust my own ears, that in these ends of the earth, in this vast howling wilderness, where the echo of the war whoop of the savage has scarcely died away, that an institution of this description should be found in such vigorous operation. Sure it is, in this instance, that the desert wastes are beginning to sing, and the wilderness to bud and blossom as the rose…
