THE NOBLE DEAD. -- It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of F. [Franklin] MANN and J. [Jonathan] R. WHIPPO, of Company F [1st Iowa Infantry]. Mr. MANN was shot early in the engagement, and before his Company had fired a gun. He was shot in the abdomen, was carried from the field by his comrades, but died soon after. He had resided in Mt. Pleasant but a few months, but in that short time had made many warm friends. He was a law student in the office of Messrs. Clark & Doolittle, and was a brother to the wife of the Junior member of the firm. He was a young man of strict morals, rare attainments and of unusual promise. His bereaved friends have our heartfelt sympathies in their affliction.

Mr. WHIPPO resided in Jefferson township, this county. We did not know him personally, but those who were acquainted with him assure us that he was a worthy young man. He was shot in the head and died instantly. He had a brother in the same company.
