Arrive From Poland

After a separation of seven and a half years, Jake Lubelchek and his family were re-united last night when the latter arrived from Poland. Owing to the bad roads the last lap of the long journey was made from Mt. Pleasant with a buggy, the arrival being about 9:45.

The adventures of Mr. Lubelcheck and his family have been quite exciting. They began with his escape with a number of others from an armed guard while being held for military service in the Russian army. He made his way to America securing a job at the pickle factory in Burlington where he worked for two years. He saved enough to buy an old horse and wagon and came to Salem where he engaged in the junk business and prospered.

The Great War interfered with Jake’s efforts to bring his family over and they ave suffered all sorts of hardships during the ensuing years. For a long time Jake was unable to send them any money as they were in the war zone and for a time he was even unable to communicate with them. Last September he started for Poland to get them but was advised at New York not to make the trip. He sent them $1000 through the Jewish committee but did not know that they got it until about New Year’s. We understand that during the recent fighting the Russian forces were within two miles of them. They were compelled to leave their homes four months ago and for two months they traveled, not knowing where they were to sleep the night, until told by the officer in charge. Their home was in Brez-litew-ski. They left Poland two months ago.

Besides Mrs. Lubelchek, there is a 22 year old daughter, a 12 year old daughter, a 19 year old son and an 8 year old son. The latter is under the doctor’s care as a result of the privations he has undergone. His eldest daughter died several years ago from the same cause we understand. Besides this, there is a married son aged 30 in Bolshevist Russia from whom they have been unable to here.
