WINONA SCHOOL to SAUNDERS SCHOOL

Old Winona, after sixty years of a checkered career, is in the hands of the wreckers and in a few days, will be but a remembrance. The building was sold as it stood, steam plant and furniture and fixtures reserved, to the contractor for the new building, Messrs. Whitney & Bergdahl, and they are taking it down and will use as much as possible in the new structure [Saunders School]. The old building has been an expensive building. It was a hoo-doo. There was always something the mater with it. More money has been spent on it for repairs than any other building in town and then it was always the poorest excuse for a school building in town. But the new building will make amends and will be the last word in modern school construction. Those who have seen the plans for the new building agree that lack of money should not be permitted to change the original plans in any particular. Petitions are already in circulation demanding of the board that they call a special election at once to permit the people to grant $5,000.00 more so that the building can be made just what is needed and wanted. The board has been bombarded with questions and queries as to the talk of substituting wood construction in the roof and in otherwise cutting out fire proof construction and other inferior substitutions in order to build within the limits of the appropriations. It may be said, if these petitions are signed by a substantial number of the people of the city, that the special election will be called.
