THE NOBLE DEAD OF JACKSON TOWNSHIP.

Oak Grove, Jackson Tp., November 14, 1868

Mr. Editor: Your readers, doubtless, all remember the meetings and processions of the surviving comrades, relatives and friends of our deceased soldiers, on the 30th day of last June. Those mounds that were made to so beautifully bloom with the tributes of affection and respect, and the nation’s dead that sleep beneath them, ‘will not be forgotten, we hope, while Country and Liberty remain.’ But of the many who fell for home and country, in the battles and hospitals of the Rebellion, how few sleep in our Northern Cemeteries! Below we give the “Roll” of those from Jackson township, who answered to the last “Roll Call" in the South or were sent home but to die:

Lorenzo Stewart, Co. K, 6th Inft., died; buried at Jefferson City, Mo.
Clarkson Hiatt, Co. F, 7th Inft., killed at Belmont, Mo.; buried there.
Jeremiah Watson, Co. F, 7th Inft., killed at Belmont, Mo.; buried there.
Josiah Cowgill, Co. F, 7th Inft., killed at Belmont, Mo.; buried there.
Appleton Seaton, Co. F, 7th Inft., killed at Corinth, Miss.; buried there.
William Hall, Co. K, 6th Inft., killed at Shiloh, Tenn.; buried there.
Thomas Shafer, Co. D, 4th Cavalry, died at Memphis, Tenn.; buried there.
G.W. Shafer, Co. F, 11th Inft., killed at Kenesaw Mountain; buried there.
James McGavic, Co. G, 11th Inft., died at Black River Station; buried there.
Albert W. Ratliff, Co. D, 14th Inft., died at Benton Barracks, Mo.; buried at Salem, Iowa.
Samuel D. Edwards, Co. D, 14th Inft., died at Benton Barracks, Mo.; buried at Salem, Iowa.
William H. Edwards, Co. D, 14th Inft., died at Savannah, Tenn.; buried there.
Willard Hall, Co. I, 14th Inft., killed at Ft. Donelson, Tenn.; buried there.
B.F. Randolph, Co. D, 14th Inft., died at Keokuk, Iowa; buried at Salem, Iowa.
James Cowgill, Co. D, 14th Inft., killed at Shiloh; buried there.
James W. Thompson, Co. C, 25th Inft., killed at Arkansas Post; buried on the field.
Newell Smith, Co. C, 25th Inft., died at Young’s Point, La.; buried there.
Samuel B. Slaughter, Co. I, 25th Inft., died in Lee Co., Iowa; buried at West Pt., Iowa.
Turner B. Wing, Co. E, 1st Cav., died in Lee Co., Iowa; buried at Salem, Iowa.
Harvey Wing, Co. E, 1st Cav., killed at Bayou Miter, Ark.; buried there.
George Johnson, Co.---, 2d Inft., killed near Holly Springs, Miss., [I think] and buried there.
Nimrod Milleson, Co. I, 17th Inft., died at Memphis, Tenn.; buried there.
Hugh Griffith, Co. I, 17th Inft., died somewhere in Ind. in hospital; buried there.
David Clark, 13th U.S. Regulars, died at Memphis, Tenn.; buried there.
Isaac Jimeson, Co. B, 3d Cav., died at Little Rock, Ark.; buried there.
Zimri B. Hiatt, Co. B, 3d Cav., died at Little Rock, Ark.; buried there.
Lewis Montgomery, Co.---, 36th Inft., died at Helena, Ark.; buried there.
Samuel Groves, Co. E, 2d N.Y. Cav., died in Andersonville prison; buried there.
John H. Hall, Co. D, 1st Mo. Cav., died at Little Rock, Ark.; buried there.
Marion Dewitte, [discharged] died at home, [a few months after]; buried at Salem, Iowa.
Andrew McCracken, [discharged] died; buried at Salem.

It will be seen by your readers that of our list of 31, there are buried in Salem Cemeteries but Six. ‘But the Names and Deeds of all are Historic!’
