It is with deep regret that information has reached us of the serious illness of our old friend, Mr. Ed Roth, who is in a Des Moines hospital with little hope of recovery from a stroke, suffered some time ago. Mrs. Roth, the former Ella Spray of Salem, is now making her home at the Hotel Ottumwa. Their son, Max, has taken charge of the Liberty Loan business, established and owned by the Roths, while Mr. Homer Roth has taken charge of the farms of his brother. Ed.
Ed Roth was born and grew up to young manhood at Trenton, this county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Roth. Entered Wesleyan, graduating with the class of 1895. While in college, he spent two of his summer vacations working for this paper, canvassing for subscribers for our weekly edition, this writer having bought the News in 1892. Roth built up the weekly list of the News from less than one hundred to close to 1,800, during those two summers, and which laid the foundation for the future of this paper. Later, Mr. Roth bought an interest in the Mt. Pleasant Journal, but in less than a year, he sold out. Later he entered business and has made a very real success.
