Ellen Burke Wants Separation From Husband

THE IOWA WESLEYAN BULLETIN

A DIVORCE CASE

Mr. Ellen T. Burke has brought a suit in the district court for a divorce from her husband, Andrew Burke. They reside south of the city. They were married in Mt. Pleasant on the 26th of July, 1899 and lived together until last Tuesday. On that day Mrs. Burke claims that her husband knocked her down, beat her with his fists and kicked her when she was down. She alleges that he has done this on frequent occasions before. She says that he has become an habitual drunk and since their marriage that he has been cruel and abusive, and when intoxicated has threatened her life, so that she believes her health and life are in danger. She asks for the custody of their little five year old daughter, and for temporary alimony of 8000, and a permanent alimony of $3,5000. She alleges Mr. Burke has personal property amount to $3,000 and real estate worth $1,500. She fears that he will place the personal property out of his hands and has appealed to the court for a write of attachment amount to $4,100. The court ordered an attachment issued to the amount of $1,000 without bond.
