Ankeny, IowaRuby May Smith, 93, of Ankeny, formerly of Fenton, Iowa, passed away October 13, 2013.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. at Ankeny Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Methodist cemetery in Fenton Iowa.Ruby was born May 3, 1920, in Dunlap, Iowa, to George and Mary Ellen Hall. After graduating from Dunlap High school, she went on to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, receiving a degree in secondary education. She taught school at Plainfield, IA. It was there she met Edwin. Edwin and Ruby married December 31, 1942. She went on to receive her Masters degree from Drake University. Ruby and Ed, both, pursued their careers in education. She began her teaching career in Plainfield, IA, and then throughout the years she taught in the following Iowa communities: Dow City, Mingo, Shipley, Rudd, Walnut, Redfield, Des Moines (Roosevelt), Nora Springs, Council Bluffs and finishing in Fenton, IA, where she retired in 1985.
Ruby was always active in church and busy with her family. Antiquing with Ed brought her much joy. She and Ed traveled the country with their RV, spending many winters in Alamo, TX.
She is survived by her two children; Susan (Ken) Nelson of Ankeny, and Roger (Carmen) Smith of Stillwater, MN, her four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and one sister Etta Torpy of Crystal Lake, MN.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 6 brothers and sisters. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Fri 18 Oct 2013.
