HALVOR TJELMELAND CAME FROM NORWAY
Obituary of Well Known Hardin County Man Who Died Last Month
Halvor Tjelmeland was born May 18, 1864, in Skaanevik, Norway, his parents being Wier and Bertha Tjelmeland.
He came to America in 1891. In the year 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Belle Sorem, Rev. C. C. Holter tying the nuptial knot. For five years they lived on a farm five miles north of Nevada, but in 1901 they moved to Hardin county, on the farm which is now their home.
Their union was blessed with eight children, five boys and three girls: Martin of McCallsburg, Andrew of Nevada, Bertha (Mrs. Oscar Osmundson) of Radcliffe, Ward of Nevada, Birdella (Mrs. Chas. Sampson) of Radcliffe, Harry, Violet and Tilmer, living at home.
Mr. Tjelmeland became seriously ill about four months ago. He sought medical aid, but nothing, it seemed, could be done to cure him of his maladies. Toward the end he failed rapidly, and on Wednesday, Dec. 14, he passed away at the age of 68 years, 6 months and 26 days.
Mr. Tjelmeland possessed a quiet and friendly personality. He was a good citizen, a hard worker and a good provider for his family; a helpful and respected neighbor and a faithful and dependable member of Zion Lutheran church.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, his above mentioned children; four brothers, Wier of Story City, John of Jewell, Erick and Tjerand in Norway; also 13 grand children.
The funeral was held on Saturday, Dec. 17. There was a brief devotional service at the house at 1:30, followed by the main services at 2:00 in Zion church, Rev. H. N. Bakke in charge. Pall bearers were Jim Hatteberg, Ole Jacobson, Chris Sampson, O. K. Johnson, Isaac Larson and Alfred Lee. Interment was made in the Zion church cemetery.
