Alden Times Nov. 1907

The death of Stephen Catlin, at his home on South Hill at half past seven o'clock Saturday evening, marks the passing away of another of the small band of early Alden pioneer settlers.

Mr. Catlin was born to Timothy and Electa Alden Catlin at Ashland, Mass., on November 20, 1836, the mother being a sister to Henry Alden, founder of our town. He arrived in Alden in the spring of 1857, making the trip from Dubuque by stage. During most of his residence here, Mr. Catlin has owned a good farm but is work has been that of a carpenter and more particularly a builder of substantial frame barns. Indeed it may be said that he has framed nearly all of the large barns in this vicinity. An exceptionally sturdy vitality has remained with him and he has been able to continue his work up to almost the very last. The age of seventy years, eleven months and six days was given him. Of these but few, at any time, were spent otherwise than in useful activity.

During a visit at his home in Massachusetts, Mr. Catlin was united in marriage with Mary Jane Hale on September 10, 1881. They have resided here ever since. Five boys and four girls were born to them, there of the latter, Flora, Glenn and Maude being now deceased. The survivors are:
Edgar F., Alden; Frank H., New Richmond, Wisconsin and Ray, Alden.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. C. H. VanMetre, pastor of the M. E. church at Belmond, Ia. in the presence of a large concourse of friends. The floral arrangements were exquisite and abundant.
Mr Catlin has always carried a name that won respect and which can be remembered by his family with prede and affection.
