WEBSTER CITY - Lyle George Berven, 87, of Webster City died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City with Rev. John Grebner and Rev. Doug Tiffany officiating. There will be visitation Wednesday at 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No 191.
Lyle was born Sept. 6, 1916, on a farm south of Kamrar to Severt and Frankie (Blue) Berven. He received his education at Kamrar, graduating in 1934. Lyle was employed by Beams Manufacturing (Electrolux). On June 6, 1936, he was united in marriage to Viola Smith at Tarkio, Mo. In October of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a P.T. boat. Following his discharge, the couple operated a grocery store at Kamrar. In 1949, they started farming south of Kamrar on his parents' farm. They moved to Webster City in 2000.
Lyle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, charter member of the Kamrar Lions Club and past president, the Northeast Hamilton School Board and past president, and the American Legion Post No. 191 of Webster City.
Survivors include his wife, Viola, of Webster City; a son, Tim Berven and wife Kolleen of Webster City; a daughter, Christine Slauson and husband Joe of Alden; grandchildren, Roy and Gus Berven, Kyle Kain, Jennifer Holden, Jeannine Kuiper, Julie Gordon and Jon Slauson; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Boyd Berven of Webster City and Stanley Berven of Abilene, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Wilson.
Foster Funeral Home of Webster City is in charge of arrangements.
