ALLISON- Vernon H. Harms, 81, of Allison died Sept. 4, 2003, at the Allison Care Center in Allison. Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 8, at the Allison United Church of Christ in Allison, with Pastor Eileen Johnson officiating. Military services were provided by the Allison AM Vets. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery at a later date.

Vernon was born Oct. 12, 1921, at Norton's Corner near Shell Rock to Gerhardt and Elma (Coster) Harms. He graduated from Shell Rock High School, and went on to serve in the Air Force. On April 22, 1944, Vernon was united in marriage to Marjorie Speedy at Ardmore, Okla. His occupation involved many aspects of petroleum, including running a tank wagon and doing independent oil jobs. He was a member of the Allison United Church of Christ, Allison AM Vets, American Legion, Petroleum Marketers Ass'n., State and Regional X-Prisoner of War Ass'n., Disabled Veterans of America, and president and founder of the Iowa Amateur Baseball Ass'n. Vernon enjoyed golf, baseball and going to the casino.

He is survived by five sons, Vernon and wife Colette of Cedar Falls, Tom and wife Sandy of Allison, Jay and wife Linda of Oskaloosa, Jim of Grimes, Jon and wife Barb of Marion; one brother, Wendell and wife Rosie of Waterloo; one sister, Maxine Madson of Alden; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, and one sister, Norma Laubscher.

Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Allison was in charge of arrangements.
