WELLSBURG-Kenneth R. Cordes, 67, of Wellsburg, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Services were held Tuesday, June 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with burial in Shiloh Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Zimmerman officiated. Full military honors were provided by Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 92 and American Legion Post No. 213.

Kenneth was born Dec. 8, 1935, in rural Dike to John and Riekstena Lupkes Cordes. He graduated from Dike High School in 1953 and attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year. He volunteered for the U.S. Army for two years and on Sept. 20, 1957, he married Glenda Krull in Parkersburg. They lived in Wellsburg before moving to Marshalltown for five years, when he returned to Wellsburg he opened the Cordes Hardware Store which he ran for 35 years. He retired in Jan. 2002. He was a member of St. Johns' Lutheran Church in Wellsburg serving a chairman of the board for many years, a past president of the Marshalltown Jaycees and member of the AMVETS Post No. 91 of Wellsburg. Kenneth was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed golf.

He is survived by his wife Glenda; a daughter, Jodie Gehrke and her husband Steve of Eldora; three sons, Randy, and wife Nancy of Wellsburg, Robert, and wife Kathy of Carroll and Andrew, and wife Dedra of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Vern Cordes and wife Mary of Dike; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
