WELLSBURG - Melissa R. Engelkes, 48, of Wellsburg died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of natural causes. Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial at Hazelgreen Cemetery, rural Ackley. A memorial fund has been established.

Melissa was born March 25, 1956, in Grundy Center to Donald and Louise (Schmidt) Ross. She received her education in the Wellsburg school system and graduated form Wellsburg High School in 1974. On July 26, 1974, Melissa was united in marriage to Eugene Engelkes at Wellsburg. After their marriage, they farmed near Wellsburg for 12 years. In 1986, they moved to Wellsburg. Melissa sold Home Interiors and Gifts for 16 years until 2002 when she quit due to health reasons. Melissa was a lifelong member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church. She was a past member of the Wellsburg Community Club and a member of the Smokey Ridge Muzzleloaders. She enjoyed golfing and camping.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene "Gene" of Wellsburg; two sons, Bret and wife Daniela of Maurice and David of Wellsburg; two daughters, Kelly Jean Engelkes of Marion, Ind., and Lindsey Engelkes of Orange City; her mother, Louise Ross of Wellsburg; two brothers, Ron Ross and wife Kathy of Grundy Center and Bill Ross and wife Claudia of Des Moines; and one sister, Ioleta Blakely of Council Bluffs. She was preceded in death by her father.
