James Potgeter Services Held

Funeral services for James A. Potgeter were held Thursday, July 16, 1992, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock. Pastor Bruce Baillie officiated.

Casketbearers were Harvin Meyer, Mark Bessman, Dennis Huisman, Larry Meyer, Ken VanHauen and Brice Bessman. Burial was in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.

James Potgeter died of cancer on Tuesday, July 14 at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Mr. Potgeter was born October 19, 1930, in Steamboat Rock, the son of George and Lydia Potgeter. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1948, attended Reed College in Portland, OR, and graduated from University of Iowa. He then attended London School of Economics in London, England. He also served three years in the Air Force in Japan during the Korean War.

On December 26, 1958, he married Joyce Hippen of Wellsburg in Conrad. He served as a senator in the Iowa State legislature from 1968 to 1972, was a member of the Republican Party, the American Legion, Iowa Grain and Feed Assoc., and the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock. For the past 20 years he worked full time at the Wellsburg Elevator Co. at Wellsburg.

He is survived by his daughter, Jami of Steamboat Rock; his mother, Lydia; a brother Edwin and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, George and his wife, Joyce, in 1991.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
