Christ Hogard Died Suddenly of Heart Attack In Forest City

Our entire community was shocked and saddened Monday afternoon by the news that Christ Hogard, one of our most respected and best liked business men, had dropped dead from a heart attack on the streets of Forest City. Christ who was born in Denmark come here in the late 1920's to purchase the local blacksmith shop doing the necessary iron work, horse shoeing and early motor repairs of that period with exceptional skill. A hard and devoted worker at his trade Christ has prospered with the changing times and has a statewide reputation as being one of the best craftsman in that profession for all Iowa. Farmers and handlers of heavy equipment from miles around Buffalo Center have been coming here for years to depend on the skill of his training and few people have attracted to our city so many out of town patrons. His loss will be one most sincerely felt by all these people although for the past few years he has been assisted by his son, Vernon, also a master of the iron crafts, welding and related work.

Christ was in his 67 year but we go to press too early to print a complete obituary. He was a 28 year member of the American Legion due to his Army service during World War I and members of Winnebago Post will conduct military services in his honor.

Funeral services will be held at the Winter Funeral home at 1:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon, Dec. 12 followed by services under the direction of Rev. Shreve at the Methodist Church.

Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in Britt.

In addition to his wife and son, Vernon and family, Christ leaves two brothers, L. Hogard of Port Arthur, Canada and Morris of Racine, Wisconsin in America as well as several other brothers and sisters in Denmark. His mother died last spring. All Buffalo Center business places will be closed during the services.

Final Rites Held Thursday For Christ T. Hogard

The American Legion Post rendered military honors to Christ Hogard at Buffalo Center and Britt last Thursday. The Winter Funeral Home was the setting for a short service for the family and immediate friends before the body was taken to the Methodist church. Here, Rev. F. W. Shreve conducted the last sad rites before going to Britt where a short prayer and song service were given at Evergreen cemetery. The Veterans honor guard then fired the customary three round salute and "Taps," the soldier's last requiem, was played. Pallbearers were all relatives of Mrs. Hogard, being Bernhard, Lewis, Victor, Walter, George and Emmanuel Peterson.

Christ T. Hogard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hogard, was born October 26, 1890 at Allsborg, Denmark. He came to the United States on August 12, 1912 and here attended Luther collage at Racine, Wisconsin. He served his adopted country during the first World War as a mechanic with the Flying School detachment of the Army Air Corps at Ebeste Flying Field, being discharged on March 25, 1919, following the end of the conflict.

After this service he came to Crystal Lake to work in the blacksmith shop for M. Iverson and later for H. P. Nelson of Britt. In 1926, he came to Buffalo Center and in 1928, went into business for himself. Here he remained for the rest of his life, gaining a state wide reputation as an exceptionally talented iron worker and welder.

On November 21, 1929, he was married to Gerda Peterson at Britt. To this union one son was born, who for the past several years has been associated with Christ in his business.

Christ was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge at Britt, and of the American Legion and Business Men's club at Buffalo Center. He was also a trustee and board member of the Methodist church here and has earned an enviable reputation as a hard and capable worker, a good friend and neighbor, a fine family man and a credit to this community in every way.

He was called to his eternal home while in Forest City on December 9, 1957 from a blood clot on the brain. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and one sister; but leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, his son Vernon; his daughter in law; one grandson; two brothers in America, Lawrence of Port Arthur, Canada and Maurice of Racine, Wisconsin; also two brothers and eight sisters who still reside in Denmark.

The continual service, honest and skillful, that he has ever rendered to his patrons and his many kindly acts and generous donations to every worthy community cause, have also left him a host of friends who will greatly miss him from our daily life.
